Surviving a Mass Shooting: 3 Tips to Secure Yourself During a Shooting Attack

Did you know that the deadliest single-day mass shooting in the history of America took place in a gay nightclub in Orlando on June 12, 2016? It took the lives of 49 people and injured over 50 people. Most of the killings in the country involved the use of legal firearms.

The issue of mass shootings in the United States has sparked debates about gun control and ownership. No matter which side of the fence you are on, the threat is real and can happen anytime, anywhere. Especially if your facility is not protected by armed security guards. For your own safety, you need to know what to do when a gunman strikes. Here are some tips from the experts on what to do to survive a mass shooting.

1. Run and get out as fast as you can

Naturally, when an attacker is on the hunt for his next victims, people tend to freeze, duck, and hide under a table or desk. But that will just make you an easy target for shooting, as gunmen are aware that potential victims are hiding under a table. Run and escape as quickly as possible while the shooter is far away from your spot.

2. If you cannot run, do some delaying tactics

In such an instance, you have no choice but to hide. Lock the door and block it with heavy furniture or cabinet. Make sure to switch the lights off. This will buy you time while planning a way to escape or while waiting for the police to arrive.

3. Use a landline to call 9-1-1

Instead of your mobile phone, use a landline to call 9-1-1. When your call gets dropped, your address will show up on the computer screen of the 9-1-1’s dispatch center. That critical information will not be transmitted if you call from your mobile phone.
